Description

What does a specifically Visual Anthropology have to offer? In what ways does a critical engagement that foregrounds the visual bring different objects of study into view? How does the use of visual technologies challenge and change understandings of ethnography that are predominantly based on texts? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in the PhD Module on doing visual anthropology today. "In the thick of images", the first part of the module title, is meant to evoke the especially dense traffic in images today, the materiality of images as physical artifacts or 'image-objects', and the charge images often bear due to the affective investments in them by persons and collectivities. Our approach to images is capacious-doctoral students working on a range of image genres, image-related practices, and with image-makers and users will be especially interested. We are pleased to have the following keynote speakers to introduce the module and participate in the two-day event: Prof. Christopher Pinney, Prof. of Visual Anthropology (CK), University College London www.ucl.ac.uk Professor Karen Strassler, Associate Professor at the City University of New York www.gc.cuny.edu
