Abstract : This thesis is part of a growing anthropological reflection on the policies of intangible cultural heritage, a reflection that takes an original turn both in the field of heritage studies and with regard to the specificity of the French case. It aims to evaluate the success and the fate of the Convention for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage (Unesco 2003) through its implementation in the French territorial space and by state heritage institutions. This questioning stems from the idea that this international system would introduce an element of disturbance both in the Eurocentric conception of heritage, by organizing a shift towards the conception of a “living” and representative heritage, and in its management, by placing it under the authority of practitioners and “communities” and by promoting the expressiveness of “popular cultures”. In this research, the aim is precisely to assess the reality of this transformation and to qualify it with regard to the trend also observed of a surreptitious return to a heritage conception that highlights the criterion of excellence and contributes to the commodification of heritage.
